Kujyuukuri

Kujyuukuri town is located in the center of the Kujyuukuri coastline, 60 kilometers from Tokyo with a population of 19,000 people. Amalgamated in 1955 by three towns, Katagai-cho, Yutaka sea town, and Nahama village sakuta district, Kujyuukuri town is still growing to this day.

The name of Kujukuri is derived from the legend of Minamoto no Yoritomo and the planting of the arrow. This coastline actually stretches 60 kilometers which is roughly 100 “ri”, an old measuring system. Subtracting one gave it the name 99 “ri” or Kujyuukuri.

People started living in this area 500~600 years ago. Historically it is told, in 1455 a sect within the Chiba clan
(Tounotsuneyorigahamashikibushoharutoshi)
was placed the under the rule of the Togane castle.
The ocean rich with sardines developed the fishing industry, and became extremely active. Netting techniques from the Kishyu area has developed in to a style of their own, many buildings were built to accommodate the large catches and fisherman which eventually developed many villages along the coast. The inland also developed through agriculture, forming new farming villages. The names of these small villages still exist today.
